Description
On May 4 & 5, 2013 the San Diego Women's Chorus, with special guests the Black Storytellers of San Diego, presents Still We Rise, a special concert event that offers a glimpse at
women’s legacy through story and song. SDWC is excited to be working once
again with special guests from the Black Storytellers of San Diego, a dynamic group of
women who promote storytelling and oral tradition through education and
entertainment. "Still
We Rise" will borrow from the black community's rich tradition of musical
expression and social awareness to provide the musical base of the program,
weaving together music and spoken word to create a special, magical event. Still We Rise illustrates and
illuminates how women have faced formidable barriers to equality and continue their climb to be accepted equally.
Inspirational, thoughtful, entertaining and moving, Still We Rise weaves together story and song to provide a glimpse into women's struggles and triumphs. SDWC will perform songs that speak to the universal themes of struggle, triumph, hope and love including "What About Love" from the musical The Color Purple, the African-American gospel "Keep Yo' Lamps," an homage to Martin Luther King Jr in "Only Light, Only Love," the gorgeous classically-inspired Latin piece "Nigra Sum," and the Latin American folk solg "Duerme Negrito."Other show-stopping numbers include Rosephannye Powell's powerful "Still I Rise" and a medly of "Girl on Fire" and "Superwoman" by Alicia Keys.
