Sounds of the Sonoran Desert

Description

Join Thomas Wiewandt, independent natural history media producer/owner of Wild Horizons Productions, and intern/Editor Jeffrey Cravath for the Phoenix premiere of their 41-minute immersive desert audio program in surround-sound. The project grew from Tom’s more than 40 years of fieldwork, beginning in graduate school at UofA and Cornell, followed by projects for the BBC and National Geographic. Independently, he produced DESERT DREAMS, now in its 8th year as a fund-raising program on PBS.

This relaxing audio program is a designed listening experience compiled from

hundreds of recordings arranged to keep listeners engaged from start to finish. Without music or narration, it features a rich and diverse blend of natural sounds from Sonoran Desert lowlands in Arizona and northern Mexico—ranging from crickets and coyotes to nighthawks and toads. To keep the senses focused on listening, only atmospheric video will appear on-screen, e.g. an afternoon skyscape followed by sunset fading to darkness, moonrise, arrival of a monsoon thunder/lightning storm, etc.

Creature voices have always been our window to the wild, and being a visual

species, we don’t often think about vanishing natural sounds. It would be a great tragedy if this program were to be the last experience of its kind that most people will ever know.

In the comfortable and acoustically superb MCC Planetarium, you can enjoy this surround-sound experience at its best. The program starts at 7:00pm and will last for about one hour, followed by Q&A with the creators.

To ensure immersion in the program, please do not bring children under 10 to this

event.

No one admitted to theater after 7:15pm when the show begins.
