Madeleine L’Engle’s

A Wrinkle in Time

Adapted for the Stage by Tracy Young

A Wrinkle in Time is produced by special arrangement with Crosswick Ltd. and Stage Partners (www.yourstagepartners.com

A Wrinkle in Time was first published in 1962 by Madeleine L'Engle who wrote the book during a time when science fiction was gaining popularity and children's literature was evolving from more simplistic, family-centered stories to include more complex and thought-provoking themes relevant to the time. She believed in the power of children’s imaginations to absorb and comprehend deeper stories that were connected the the very world that they lived in. The novel received critical acclaim upon its release and quickly gained recognition for its imaginative storytelling and unique blend of science, fantasy, and spirituality. These same things led the novel to face numerous attempts to ban it citing “unconventional themes,” “religious blasphemy,” and “mixing of science and spirituality.” Madeleine L'Engle's writing was openly praised, however, for its ability to appeal to both children and adults. It was awarded the prestigious Newbery Medal in 1963, a testament to its literary significance and contribution to children's literature.

The story follows the remarkable journey of Meg Murry, her younger brother Charles Wallace, and their friend Calvin O'Keefe. They embark on an extraordinary adventure through time and space to rescue Meg and Charles Wallace's father, a brilliant scientist who has mysteriously disappeared. Guided by three celestial beings, Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which, the children travel to otherworldly realms, confront evil forces, and ultimately discover the strength of their love for one another. A Wrinkle in Time is a classic tale of good versus evil, the triumph of light over darkness, and the importance of embracing one's individuality. In a universe filled with wonder and danger, Meg and her companions learn that the power to change the world lies within each of us.

This adaptation, written by playwright and director Tracy Young, was first produced at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival for their 2013-2014 Season. Young’s adaptation sets the story in 1962, and utilizes 12 unique storytellers to narrate and “read” the story to the audience. This cast of storytellers also become the characters and settings in this magical reimagining. Join us for an unforgettable journey as we present A Wrinkle in Time on the stage, where the power and magic of theater brings this beloved story to life, hopefully inspiring audiences of all ages to believe in the extraordinary within themselves.
