By Kevin P. Hill | Directed by Michael Jablonski In the small village of Lamptown, Ohio, lives a group of unhappy dreamers who don't understand reality, just trying to survive on their fragile hopes for the future. Every Thursday evening at the Casino Dance Hall near Elsinore Abbott's Bon Ton Hat Shop, women and men come together to escape their uneventful lives, allowing themselves moments of fantasy. While Charles, Elsinore's husband, is usually absent, she finds solace in the dances. Dance Night shows how people get trapped in a system that promises the world but delivers nothing. This theme is perhaps the cruelest and most suffocating part of American capitalism. The theory says everyone can make it big and become wealthy, but most remain wage-dependent, doing demeaning work with no social status. |
