Overview

A choreographic collaboration between Nell Shipman, Artistic Director of the Portland Ballet and Annie Kloppenberg, Associate Professor of Dance takes as its inspiration Maine's lighthouses as portals to explore land, water, wayfinding, and navigation in an original contemporary ballet. The performance features an expanded Portland Ballet Company with dancers from Colby, who have joined the company for the month of January to develop this work. The collaboration between Shipman, whose work has been called "refined and engrossing" (Portland Press Herald) and Kloppenberg, "a choreographer of nuances" (Boston Globe), will yield a richly layered work that treats Maine as history and home.

Founded in 1980, Portland Ballet is Maine’s professional ballet company. Under the artistic direction of Nell Shipman, Portland Ballet presents classical and neo-classical story ballets as well as contemporary works, and attracts professional dancers from around the country as well as internationally. Portland Ballet participates in many outreach programs and collaborates with other local (arts) institutions. Our community performances reach over 1,500 local students and residents of retirement communities and disability support homes annually.
